Monarch Tagging Program with Indiana Wildlife Federation

September 28, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Join CILTI staff and Indiana Wildlife Federation for a hands-on community science event at Nonie Werbe Krauss Nature Preserve to help document the monarchs’ fall migration.

About this event

The Monarch Watch Tagging Program is a large-scale community science project that was initiated in 1992 to help understand the dynamics of the monarch’s spectacular fall migration through mark and recapture.

At this event, staff will train attendees to gently capture monarch butterflies in butterfly nets and affix a small numbered sticker to the hindwing. The international monarch monitoring program called Monarch Watch provides stickers and datasheets for this project.

This event is brought to you in partnership with Indiana Wildlife Federation.

All Ages

Free – RSVP Required

What to Expect and Bring:

  • Based on where we locate the butterflies, there may be a lot of walking required.
  • Dress in long pants thick enough to stand up to thorns, brush, poison ivy, ticks, and mosquitos (unfortunately leggings aren’t very protective).
  • Wear closed-toed shoes that can stand up to mud.

Registration:

Please preregister through Eventbrite so we know to expect you.

Directions:

From Interstate 69 and 116th Street in Fishers: Head west on 116th Street about 3 miles to Eller Road. The property is on the southwest corner of 116th Street and Eller Road. Public parking is available behind Riverside Middle School (10910 Eller Road). Staff will meet you on the bridge by the playground.
