DESCRIPTION:“Opt outside” on the day after Thanksgiving: Join our Executive Director for a guided walk through this old growth forest. \n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\n\nCILTI Executive Director Cliff Chapman is back for our popular #optoutside Black Friday hike. This time he will lead a guided nature walk through Calvert and Porter Woods Nature Preserve\, near Crawfordsville. It is one of the most stunning old growth forests in the state. Some of the ancient trees measure 60 inches in diameter. Enjoy a rare chance to see a property that is only accessible with permission from the DNR Division of Nature Preserves. \nAll Ages \nRSVP required \nWhat to Expect and Bring: \n\nPark and meet in the field adjacent to 9740 200 South\, Crawfordsville.\n\n\nThere are no formal trails on site and this hike may be challenging for some.\n\n\nHike will begin and end with a ¼ mile walk across a farm field south of Calvert and Porter Nature Preserve.\n\n\nDress in long pants thick enough to stand up to thorns\, brush\, insects\, and cold weather (unfortunately leggings are not very protective).\n\n\nWear closed-toed shoes that can stand up to mud.\n\n\nPlease plan to arrive on time.\n\nRegistration: \nPlease preregister through Eventbrite so we know to expect you. \nParking: \nPark on the roadside just west of 9740 200 South\, Crawfordsville. See attached map. Native Americans\, looking to keep track of time\, named the full moons every month based on what was happening in nature. \nAll Ages \nFree – RSVP required \nWhat to Expect and Bring: \n\nBe prepared to walk in areas with limited lighting.\n\n\nDress for the weather and be sure to wear pants thick enough to stand up to thorns and brush (unfortunately leggings aren’t very protective).\n\n\nIt may be cold after sunset\, so dress to keep warm.\n\n\nWear closed-toed shoes that can stand up to mud.\n\nRegistration: \nPlease preregister through Eventbrite so we know to expect you. \nDirections: \nFrom Interstate 69 and 116th Street in Fishers: Head west on 116th Street about 3 miles to Eller Road. The property is on the southwest corner of 116th Street and Eller Road. Public parking is available behind Riverside Middle School (10910 Eller Road). Migratory birds use this preserve’s riverside oasis as a pit stop to refuel for their journey. \nWe hope you will stick around after your walking tour to continue birding\, talking birds and conservation\, and supporting Indiana craft breweries and cideries. Black Acre Brewing\, Ash & Elm Cider and Indiana City Brewing have donated cider and beer for us to enjoy. Look for fall migrants making their way south through our city. Migratory birds use Oliver’s Woods’ riverside oasis as a pit stop to refuel for their journey. \nIndy Brew Bus on Tap will be onsite pouring local craft beer\, canned cider and wine. Your ticket includes one drink. A cash bar will be available for additional drinks. ‘Tour only’ tickets do not include a drink. Feel free to bring snacks! \nWe hope you will stick around before or after your walking tour to continue birding\, talking birds and conservation\, and supporting Indiana craft breweries and cideries. \nA portion of the proceeds from this event will go to CILTI and the Indiana Audubon Society.
